Folly Facade
01/06/2016Folly Facade s build in the historic landscape garden of the Fraeylemaborg in the Dutch town Slochteren. It consist out of the old demolished church tower of Zuidhorn. Discarded architecture is reused at a new location. The tower is cut in the longitudinal direction in two parts and folded open. In that way it creates a façade in front of a container which is used as an exhibition space. The age of the tower reflects the atmosphere of the historic garden.

Stepping Stones

This research is done by the department of Human Movement Sciences of the University of Groningen The setup is completed with seating objects made out of the same stones and is part of the project Monter Selwerd in Groningen.

Fiat Gondola
20/04/2015The Netherlands has a dense network of historical waterways which are rarely used these days. A part of the district Binckhorst in the city of The Hague is demolished enable the construction of a new highway along a canal which lost its function. Is this also necessary if we move from transport by the car into sailing by boat? The Fiat Gondola, a new car model suitable for this purpose, and we tested it out.

Animation Billboard
19/03/2013The quayside in the city of Assen (NL) is enriched with a billboard that I have designed. This billboard shows in an animation the residents of Assen what the near future will be of this outdated industrial area next to the city center. The unveiling of the object was also the start of the work which will transform the area the coming ten years into a modern urban living area. The billboard is moveable and will always accompany the work.

Cozy Shelter
12/02/2012The Cozy Shelter, is a inflatable hiding place that has the defensive look of a sandbag fortress from the outside. The inside is a contrast with the outside, it appears like a pastel collard cave, people can enjoy the cozy and safe atmosphere of soft woolen blankets. The Cozy Shelter is part of the exhibition Designworld in the designmuseum of Helsinki.

Children's Pillow Tent
03/02/2012Small inflatable Pillow Tent for indoor use in the Anthropologie shop in Seattle. The tent functions as a small playground for children, while the parents take a look at the products in the shop. The interior is made of soft colorful materials which create a cozy atmosphere so the children feel directly at home!

Canal Taxi
15/06/2009Community art project in Liverpool. The city council wanted to give the dilapidated Leeds-Liverpool Canal positive attention and stimulate tourism. Artists were invited to start this process and draw attention to the channel. The taxi which was converted to a boat taxi refers to the wrecks at the bottom of the canal there and show what you achieve using a car wreck. The taxi has operated for a whole summer on the canal as a water taxi. Commissioned by Urbanism 2009 Liverpool.

Shed
04/06/2008Saved from demolition and redeveloped as a boat, this old shed sailed to the the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen and was included in its collection. This open air museum has salvaged buildings of historical interest in the vicinity of the former Zuiderzee (Southern Sea). The shed has since been used during festivals and cultural events. Commissioned by Ida van der Lee.

01/05/2008The three Dutch naval heroes, De Ruyter, Maurits and Piet Hein, in turbulent times found a safe haven in the port of Delfzijl. To remember this fact, the heads of these heroes were placed at the centre of a roundabout , where they look straight at you when you approach.

Tube Lamps
01/04/2007These lights work in the same way as a pneumatic cylinder. The luminous portion moves in and outwards by using air pressure. This way you can adjust the light intensity, and use the lamp both as mood light as well as a work light.

Waffle Chairs
01/03/2007The Waffle chairs can provide more than just comfort, they can produce food and pillows. On the seats you bake waffles and make waffle-shaped pillows from polyether foam. Both sides of the seat are made of baking irons, when they are hot you only have to put the waffle mix on it and close the seat. In five minutes the soft, your warm waffle or pillow is ready.

Artificial Moon
01/08/2006The Artificial Moon will change the face of the Earth. An inflatable ball with a diameter of one kilometer will be filled with hot air and subsequently rise. The ball will be a temporary celestial body and become a second moon for the earth. During an artist in residance at KIK in Kolderveen I did a test project (scale model) to give an indication of how it works.

Reversor
01/06/2006A tree is clamped in a hydraulic mechanism. It is sawn between two parts of this machine so it can hinge. Now it is possible to put the tree down, but also back in to its upright position. If you regret cutting down a beautiful tree. you can now easily recover the error. The reversor was made for a project of Kunstenlab.

Magnet Clock
01/11/2005Digital clock, which digits are formed by growing pixels made of iron powder. Electromagnets on the back ensure that iron, transported via oil, on the front is attracted or repelled. Cam wheels drive the system.

Brick Industry
01/06/2005Project Brick Industry at a new housing estate shows that it is possible to find and produce building materials at or near the place where the houses are built. At the location "Broekpolder" near the village Heemskerk (NL) was clay in the ground, which, using found wood, could be perfectly baked into bricks. Nowadays, most materials and the builders are transported from faraway to construction sites.

Box Tent
01/06/2004This tent was designed and made to house the Boxing machine during several festifals in the Netherlands. The tent, which gets its stregth from high pressure air, weighs almost nothing altthough its size is coniderable. It can easily be managed by one person.

Flexible house
15/07/2003The different layers of this object are symbolizing the different functions of a standard house. When a function of a layer is not utilized, this layer disappears. If it is utilized again, the layer fills with air. This way, the volume of the object stays minimized.

Driving currant Bun
15/06/2003At special occasions, the B1 Bakers, Erik Botman and Lambert Kamps carried out some high-profile bake performances. They made the biggest Poffert (cooked currant loaf) ever, baked a riding Currant Bun and tried to fly away in a Pie-copter.

Balloon tent
31/12/2002The balloon tent is made of the upper half of a depreciated hot air balloon. Equipped with a ballasted rim and filled with air, it turns into a dome tent in which about 300 people can party.

Boxing
01/12/2002Boxing is an interactive game for two people.
Participants control, via panel buttons on the floor, a cart containing a boxing glove. The idea is to place the cart into a position so you can hit the opponent.
Boxing is inspired by highly violent computer games in which the player can lose several lives. In Boxing a punch can really hurt. -
Space Maker
15/08/2002The Space Maker is a tent with an interactive moving roof. The roof is normally too low to stand in the tent. At the places visitors move towards, the tent roof rises up automatically so you can stand there. When you walk, ahead of you the roof goes up, and behind you it goes back down. That way, the volume of the tent stays minimal.

01/09/2001The Air Bridge has been developed as a test object to examine the possibilities of inflatable spans. The results are still to be incorporated into an inflatable building with multiple floors. The construction consists of only pressurized air and cloth.

Ferry-Go-Round
15/08/2001The Ferry-Go-Round was a ferry across the pond between the two festival sites at the Noorderzon Festival in Groningen. In a theatrical and disorienting way, the public was transpaorted over water. The Ferry-Go-Round is a collaboration with Tjeerd Veenhoven.

For each presentation, this construction will grow a little, so that one day... The design is the result of images that sprung to mind during sleepless nights.

Inflateble furniture
15/06/1999This furniture can be filled with air or be deflated. You fill up what you need and deflate what you don’t use. Now it is possible to move to a smaller house, because one room can be used for all purposes. A room can change its function, for example from a living room into a bedroom: you fill up your bed and deflate your table, chairs and cupboard.

01/06/1998Three flashing headlights generate different numbers. They state the past and hopefully future years of the Minerva Academy in Groningen. The institute selebrated its 200th birthday at That time.

Traffic Jam
01/05/1998Before the advent of the car, this old canal was the main trafficking route to the old town of Meppel. The road took over this position and parts of the canal were filled in to make way for cars, but there are still long queues at the traffic lights.
The playful cars in the canal give the people stuck in traffic a cheerful image of the awkward situation they are in. -
Flowerpot
01/05/1995This oversized flowerpot was placed around the trunk of a tree. The enormous scale of the pot reduces a tree to a pot plant. The pot has toured through Groningen and it diminished various trees.
